42. Boats - Practical Tests

 

Key Points

Safety first, safe speed, watch divers and propeller, careful of other surface traffic, avoid damage to propeller, keep passengers informed about changes in speed and direction etc. Always be aware of current, wind and location of divers. Approach from down wind or down current whichever has the greatest influence.

Practical Tests

  1. Prepare boat for towing.
  2. Launching of boat - including loading.
  3. Start main engine and move away from shore, adjust engine and boat trim as appropriate.
  4. Approaching and securing to a buoy.
  5. Pick up floating object from water.
  6. Come into shore and moor to slip/pontoon.
  7. Slow speed slalom, including circling objects and U turns.
  8. Hold steady in position facing into wind/tide for 3 minutes.
  9. Three point (narrow passage) turn.
  10. Reverse slow speed slalom.
  11. High speed manoeuvres, ‘planing, ‘S’ turns, ‘U’ turns, figure of eight
  12. Emergency stops - danger of flooding
  13. Man overboard drill.
  14. Anchor boat in 10m water - preparation and flaking, recover and move off.
  15. Lining up on transits.
  16. Recover boat and prepare for towing.
  17. Cleaning/washing and preparation for storage.

Others.

  1. Demonstrate GPS operation.
  2. Waypoints - setting/goto/arrive.
  3. Compass navigation - Course to steer.
  4. Assessing leeway.
  5. Sonar wreck finding.
  6. Demonstrate transit identification.
  7. Buoyage.
