17. Pilotage

 

Key Points

Take slates and pencil to map out the terrain. Note the depths at key locations, might require markers (weights with floats to peg out). Can follow terrain rather than use compass points, frequently returning to shot line.

Introduction

Brief (SEEDS)

E - Explain what, why, how long, where  - map out the terrain, e.g.’ wreck site.

E - Full kit. compass. slate and pencil, markers.

S - Come up slowly in case of difficulty. always be aware of where the shot line is.

D - Keep close, pay attention, look carefully and repeat when prompted.

S - 'Up', 'down', 'you watch me', 'you repeat’, ‘remember this’.

On Descent

  1. Look around, get orientated
  2. Ask buddy to repeat

Deep

  1. Drop any markers at shot base, note position on slate and record depth, Student to repeat.
  2. Identify North and face that way, mark North and shore on slate
  3. Mark direction of sand ripples. Students repeat.
  4. Look around and draw area immediately around shot (include shot), use dark areas to mark wreckage etc.
  5. Ask buddy to repeat on their slate
  6. Head north for a few meters (depending on visibility) and chart terrain and other items. Use marker if required
  7. Head East and repeat
  8. Head South and repeat
  9. Head West and repeat
  10. If time widen area using markers as applicable.
  11. Recover equipment and ascend
