Eccleston Delph

Half Penny Lane, Eccleston

Introduction

I understand that this place is being commercialised and it looks like it is being drained. You can see the water level marks on the photos.

It is a large quarry with an average depth of about 10m, maximum about 13m. It is just a bit smaller than Capernwray but very silty, At depth the visibility is almost zero and it is very dark.

There seems to be plenty of car wrecks in there and you can see the quarry workings towards the centre. We saw several Perch and there is talk of Roach and Pike.

Services

Non really, parking for about 10 cars. Eccleston in only a mile or two away.

Safety

No extraordinary problems here, watch the visibility and it can quickly reduce to zero. You need a good torch and keep your buddyline handy.

If you don't fancy a second dive (and who could blame you) the River Lune or Capernwray is just up the road.

Look out for the entrance

How to get there

Take J27 off the M6 heading East towards Northern Diver. almost immediately turn right (North) along the B5250. For the first part this road runs parallel with the M6. Follow the road until to get to Eccleston.

In the heart of Eccleston you come to a very small green on your left, immediately after that turn left along Bannister Road.  About 1.5 miles down there you will see a thatched cottage on the left, take the road immediately before that on your right. This is Halfpenny Road but the sign is missing, about 50 yards down there on the right is the opening to Eccleston Delph.
