| Jacobs Ladder |
A rope ladder, lowered from the deck so that seafarers can climb aboard. |
| J Valve |
A valve with a spring loaded mechanism that allows a reserve of air in the tank that can be actuated by pulling a lever secured to the valve. Not generally used today. |
| Jetsam |
Goods cast overboard in order to lighten a vessel which is in danger of being sunk, notwithstanding that afterwards it perishes. |
| Jetty |
A structure, usually made of concrete or wood that projects out from the shore so that boats can tie up. |
